Year One have been very busy and very creative today – using bottles, masking tape, newspaper, glue and tissue paper to create our own wild things. This slideshow shows the work from this morning in 1CS. Wait till you see the finished creatures!
Thank you very much to everyone who helped with our creating!

Please help your child to achieve success by working with him or her at home.
Here are a few suggestions that you can use to support your child’s learning in school.
Literacy
Ten minutes each day reading your child’s school reading book is one of the most important ways you can support your child’s learning. Please aim to do this as often as you can and record any comments in your child’s home reading diary. We also love to hear about any other books you may have shared together at home.
Share information books, look at the features – Spellow Library has lots of information books for you to borrow!
Phonics Screening Check
As you may be aware the government are introducing a statutory phonics screening check for all children in Year One. This will take place in June this year. Further information about the check and ideas as to how you can support your child can be found here: http://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/Question/Index/9
Numeracy
Practise addition and subtraction facts within 10. How quickly can you recall the answer?
Read clock time focusing on o’clock and half past times.
Practise reading numbers in your home local environment, numbers on buses, doors, prices in shops etc.
Creative Curriculum
Our Wonderful World – Plants
Look at the different plants in and around school and home, look at how they grow and change. Explore all the plants (and animals in the park – including insects!)
Look at all the different plants we eat – look for pictures of them growing and talk about where they come from. Carefully watch the growth of the pea seed taken home.
We are looking forward to a special visitor – a professional artist who will be helping us create our own imaginary creatures. For this project we need to collect 2 litre pop bottles- we would be most grateful if you could send in any washed out bottles.
We are currently planning our summer trip to Knowsley Safari Park – we are hoping to keep the cost below £10 but will give you further details of dates and accurate cost nearer the time.
Thank you for your support Year One Staff

We are investigating information texts at the moment in Year1. The Oxford Owl website has ebooks to explore – The books are grouped by age – here is a link to the the age 5-6 selection.
You can change the age group for different books.
How many of the special features of an information book can you spot Year 1?
Can you find a contents page, an index or a glossary? What about headings, labels, captions, and interesting facts?
Have fun!

We launched our new theme of Paws and Claws this week. The children invited their teddy bears into school, followed a recipe to make cookies and we finished with a picnic for the bears today.
We have handwriting homework and the children have brough home the recipe we followed to make cookies, they were very keen to bring it home and hoped to be able to make some cookies with you at home!
If you would like some extra work here are some links to activities to help the children learn to read weighing scales.
